Cam Newton leads Super Bowl champ Panthers to victory

Beneath the glow of the purple-and-blue crown, whose blade-like thorns appeared to lift his bright red hair and dazzle the crowd at EverBank Field, Cam Newton was even more of a showstopper.

The Carolina Panthers’ quarterback led his team to a 31-24 win over the New Orleans Saints in Week 1 of the NFL season, with two touchdown passes in the first two touches of the game.

The Super Bowl MVP pumped up the sellout crowd of 75,019 by scoring on the first drive of the game with a sneak into the end zone. He then lobbed a perfect pass, a 61-yard rainbow to Kelvin Benjamin in the end zone.

Newton finished with 295 yards passing and 47 yards rushing, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The game finished with four fumbles and four lost fumbles.

The Panthers recovered from a 24-17 deficit to tie it up at 24 apiece in the third quarter, before the Saints took a 27-24 lead into the final frame.

The Panthers and the Bengals finally head to their respective dressing rooms — 2,989 minutes into the fourth quarter, and two minutes later — the Bengals score with 4:17 left in the game to retake the lead 28-24. Super Bowl champs!

But the Panthers have one last major possession before the game-ending huddle. After attacking in the red zone, Newton finds wide receiver Philly Brown for a touchdown, a 30-yard play, to put Carolina back on top 31-28.
