A town is slowly being evacuated, trees are falling down and houses are flooded — but there is still life to see in the streets of Revelstoke, B.C.

Residents and visitors are having to carry on as best they can in areas of the town destroyed by heavy rain over the past few days. Several highways were closed, and many residents were trapped in homes and buildings, in the area around Revelstoke Mountain and Lillooet Mountain.

“We definitely have quite a bit of mud,” Mayor Denis Tighe told CNN, on Saturday. “Obviously there is no power, there is no cell phone service, there is no way to get to work, get to medical services, for instance.”

According to the Canadian Press, the hill is 300 feet high and features ski lifts and a bridge, as well as more than 100 hectares of fruit orchards and other agricultural land. Flooding appears to have started on the mountain road, then moved down the mountain and inundated homes and buildings.

Schools and businesses are also being closed as the evacuation order for Burns Lake, which is around 15 kilometers (9 miles) northeast of Revelstoke, is extended to include other areas, in town and at the end of the mountain.

As many as 100 people were forced to leave their homes in Revelstoke overnight, according to CNN affiliate CBC.

A Facebook group was set up on Saturday for people affected by the flooding, where locals who live in the areas around Revelstoke are posting photos and updates.

“We have a town that seems to be almost totally in ruins, with trees falling down, the worst of the flooding in places, there’s definitely a lot of standing water, and hundreds of trees are down,” Tiedt told CNN.

“It looks like someone walked onto a rollercoaster, and flipped all the cars, and now the ground is covered in bedding material, and car seats, it’s like everything that fell around the bridge has come down and coated the ground with mulch, it’s just terrible.”
